Can I just reface the cabinets instead of replacing everything?

I've been dreaming about a kitchen remodel for years now, but every time I get serious about it and start looking at costs, I get sticker shock and put the idea back on the shelf. My cabinets are solid wood and the boxes are in decent shape, but the doors are this ugly oak with a finish that's turned orange over time, and the hardware is dated and falling apart. I've been wondering if I could save a ton of money by just refacing the cabinets instead of ripping everything out and starting from scratch. From what I've read, refacing involves keeping the existing cabinet boxes and just replacing the doors, drawer fronts, and hardware, maybe adding some new veneer to the exposed parts. It sounds like it could give me a completely new look for a fraction of the cost of a full replacement, but I'm not sure if it's as straightforward as it sounds or if there are hidden pitfalls I'm not considering. I also worry that refacing might feel like a half-measure and I'll end up wishing I'd just done the full replacement down the line. My countertops also need replacing and I'd love to add a backsplash, which I think I could still do even if I go the refacing route.
